Hawkes Learning Systems

Hawkes Learning Systems ( HLS ) is interactive, multimedia courseware that instructs and tutors students as well as assesses their progress. HLS is often used as an automated homework system. Every section of HLS offers a homework “certification”, which is based on a mastery level of learning. HLS offers a multimedia presentation of every section, algorithmically generated practice questions, and intelligent tutoring. Our courseware uses artificial intelligence to anticipate and diagnose common errors made by students. HLS can be used as a supplement to your lecture-driven courses as well as a standalone course in distance-learning and self-paced environments.

The courseware consists of the following modes:

	Instruct is a multimedia presentation of each topic. The Instruct mode provides definitions, rules and properties, along with example problems, important hints, and helpful notes to enhance the student’s learning experience. Many HLS products offer video clips and animation for an interactive presentation of math concepts.
	Practice teaches problem solving. The problems in each lesson are algorithmically generated to allow for unlimited practice. Students receive intelligent feedback on incorrect answers, can work at their own pace by selecting the level of difficulty, and have access to our Interactive Tutor for help with every problem.
	Certify is where students do their homework. Each lesson contains a homework certification with algorithmically generated problems. No two students will ever have the same assignment! Each certification is based on a mastery level of learning, allowing students to work at their own pace and without the anxiety normally associated with testing.

Interactive Tutor provides students with intelligent feedback, step-by-step assistance, and complete solutions to practice problems.

Explain Error

Uses artificial intelligence to anticipate and diagnose common errors made by students. This helpful feedback enables students to learn from their mistakes by showing them what they did wrong.

Step-by-Step

Breaks the problem into small, more manageable steps. Whether students only want help getting started or need to work out the entire problem in small steps, this feature develops their skills as problem-solvers.

Solution

Allows students to view the entire, worked-out solution to the problem. Every step of the solution is justified. Students gain valuable problem- solving skills from seeing the correct way to arrive at a solution.
